Black Tree Fern
We were on the island of Rakiura in New Zealand searching for arguably the most famous and rare fern in the world. The “Mamaku” or Black Tree Fern is a monster that reaches 60’ in its’ native habitat. Its’ beautiful black trunk and graceful arching branches are simply unmatched by any other. We set up camp in a clearing by a large group of these ferns and sat around the fire comparing notes and labeling spores that we had collected. As it became dark the sky lit up! Intense plasma arcs and curtains of color rippled across the sky. Red, green and yellow colors simmered and then faded. These massive tree ferns were silhouetted against the Aurora Australis and it was breathtakingly beautiful. It was truly a magical moment and one of the most beautiful evenings we had ever experienced. We sell these amazing ferns in quart containers and the plants measure 8" in diameter.
