We were setting out to climb mount Cyclops in Irian Jaya, and the nothing was going right. Our compass, GPS and cameras were stolen at the airport. Most of our baggage had not made the same journey we did, and what did had gotten wet. The trail ahead was a very muddy, steep switchback that ascended into the clouds. It had just stopped raining (again) and we called a huddle. As we were psyching ourselves up for the arduous hike ahead somebody noticed a mature Caryota zebrine palm by the side of the path. It was stunning with the boldest striping we had ever seen! We all gathered around and admired its markings and it reminded us why we put ourselves through these ordeals. No matter how difficult traveling can be the rewards of discovery always outweigh the hassles! The mature palm was loaded with berries and we helped ourselves. Caryota zebrine or the Zebra Palm is much more cold hardy than the snakeskin palm but looks identical. We sell the largest plants for the best price!
