Pom Pom Tree
We first encountered this stunning small tree on our trip along the Drakensberg escarpment in KwaZulu-Natal. Dais cotinifolia is a member of the Thymelaeaceae family and while it grows to 12 meters in its native habitat, it only seems to grow to 6 meters in cultivation. In summer months it is positively drenched in pink, sweet-scented, globular flower heads about 3 inches across which last for a month! The sent can fill a garden like no other and is similar to the sweet smell of Daphne to which it is related! Frost protection should be given initially until established but it is hardy down to the 20’s once established. It is both wind & drought tolerant and will tend to go deciduous briefly during winter in colder areas. We offer this rare, fast growing little gem in 1 gallon containers.
