Rice Paper Plant
This plant is a must have for any fan of large leaved plants! It gives an instant tropical feel to any lightly shaded spot. It tolerates widely variable conditions from salty winds, sandy soil, we have it growing in clay and it is growing like gangbusters! It is a large plant that can be controlled by removing the suckers at the base. We prefer it as a single trunked small tree for maximum tropical umbrella like effect. As its common name implies a type of fine 'rice paper' is made from the white pith of the stems of this plant. This freely suckering shrub grows vigorously to 20' tall and has a similar spread. The huge, umbrella-like, many lobed leaves are a shiny mid-green above, felty underneath. New growth has a distinctive pale brownish bloom. The flowerheads are creamy white, fluffy balls held in large, loose panicles; they appear during fall and are followed by black berries. Zones: 8-11. We sell this amazing plant in quart containers.
