Alpinia purpurata, also known as Red Ginger and Ostrich Plume Ginger is native to the Malaysian eco-region and are plants with very showy flowers on long, brightly colored red bracts. The actual flower is a small white flower nestled deep within the bract. There are several cultivars including Jungle King and Jungle Queen. This plant is grown throughout the tropics as an ornamental and can be grown successfully in a container or very sheltered spot in the garden. It must have ample water and protection from frosts. The plant can be heavily mulched and allowed to die back in winters with protection. We sell this remarkable plant in one gallon containers and they are 2’ tall!
