Ravenea glauca
We were traversing the Andringitra Mountains in Madagascar. Hotter than Hades in the Dry forest we were working our way south down a steep wash of sand and gravel. We sat down to rest under a beautiful Ravenea glauca which is endemic to just this area. We figured it could not get much water annually and it was in the scorching sun but it looked stunningly lush. What a beautiful palm! It turns out that this palm is one of the best palms for cultivation from Madagascar. It takes a wide variety of soils and growing conditions from shade to full sun and little to a lot of water and still looks great! This palm grows with its truck flat on the ground for the first foot or so (tillering) so do not bury the horizontal part of the trunk. Other than that we dare you to try to kill it! It is remarkable robust. We sell these rare gems in one gallon pots and ship them bare root in moss.
