Giant Tree Aloe Non-Branching
Working our way through the brush it seemed like every plant in Gorongosa national park in Mozambique had thorns! We were all bleeding from both legs! Our guide signaled for us to stop. He un-shouldered his rifle and gestured for us to quickly follow him down the rocky slope to the bottom of the ravine. Before we could turn the bush erupted with a tremendous crash and deafening trumpet! A mother elephant charged through the brush and into the clearing. We did not hear her coming until she was right upon us and she was upset! It turns out we had inadvertently positioned ourselves between her and her young calf which is a major No - No! Our guide shouted and pointed but we did not need explaining as we bolted down the rugged path to the bottom of the ravine. The mother elephant ripped out a good sized shrub with rocks and soil still attached and hurled it in our direction with a crash! As we regrouped at the bottom of the ravine we were all excitedly talking and laughing we noticed a group of large, heavy stemmed tree aloes, which did not branch. They had a mature height of about 4 meters tall. On one of them an inflorescence erupted near the crown of the leaves and rose 1 meter tall in an elaborate candelabra festooned with salmon flushed with orange colored flowers! This tree Aloe’s offspring has grown for us extremely vigorously and is hardy to 25 degrees. Plant it in full sun in a well draining soil mix. This fast growing hardy tree Aloe is a unique addition to any succulent collection. Plants are shipped bare root.
