We were stranded! On the northern tip of Madagascar lies the city of Antsiranana. Our driver never showed at the agreed upon place and we sat in a tiny, one counter open air bar nursing our beers while we decided what to do. We only had a few days to see Fôret d’Ambre, Montagne d’Ambre, or “Amber Mountain” park before we had to leave for the south. After striking up a conversation with the owner of the bar he offered to take us himself! At the park we were surrounded by a troop of 4 lemurs calling in the trees above us! It was truly surreal and completely otherworldly as their calls were unlike any other we had ever heard. As we hiked along a trail we came upon a very succulent Impatiens species that almost looked like a miniature Baobab tree! It grew 2 meters tall and was covered with small pinkish red flowers that looked bird’s heads! It turns out that this impatiens is extremely rare and only known to two grow in two or three locations in the wild! We were able to collect some seed from an Impatiens bicaudata plant growing in a garden in Antsiranana and have been propagating this rare and unusual plant just for you! They are huge and ready to sell! 4"pots $19.99
